Wind and storage for the Khan Altai ore processing plant
Mining operations in western Mongolia are often far from strong grid connections. For the Khan Altai ore processing plant in Yesunbulag Soum, Govi-Altai, the answer was to generate power on site: a 5 MW wind power plant paired with a 2.5 MW / 5 MWh battery energy storage system.
Shugam LLC carried out the engineering design and provided design supervision throughout construction and installation. The design covers the full chain from turbine to plant:
- Ten 500 kW wind turbines, each with its own 630 kVA 0.6/10 kV step-up transformer substation (KTPN).
- A 4.5 km single-circuit 10 kV overhead line and a 10 kV switchgear substation with eight KYN-28 panels.
- The 2.5 MW / 5 MWh BESS, which smooths wind variability and covers peak demand.
- A 1.3 MVar static var generator (SVG) for voltage regulation.
Combining wind generation with storage and reactive power control on one site lets an industrial consumer run on renewable energy without compromising supply quality. Read the full project details: 5 MW wind power plant with 2.5 MW / 5 MWh BESS for the Khan Altai ore processing plant.
