2025 in review: electric mining and 130+ MWh of energy storage
Battery storage and electrification defined our work in 2025. Across three projects, Shugam LLC designed infrastructure for more than 130 MWh of energy storage and for the shift of heavy mining equipment from diesel to electricity.
Electrifying heavy haulage at Oyu Tolgoi
To cut greenhouse gas emissions, Oyu Tolgoi is replacing diesel heavy-duty vehicles with electric ones. We produced the detailed engineering design of the battery swapping and charging station infrastructure: a 35 kV overhead line, a substation with two 2000 kVA transformers, cable lines, grounding and lightning protection, and the material take-off. We then supervised construction, testing and commissioning through to state commission acceptance. Heavy-duty electric vehicle battery swapping and charging station at the Oyu Tolgoi mine site.
Stabilising the western grid with a 10 MW / 42 MWh BESS
Tom Nar Energy's battery energy storage system in Yesunbulag Soum, Govi-Altai, reduces peak load and line losses in the Western Regional Energy System. Our scope covered the full BESS design, a 1×12.5 MVA 10/110 kV step-up substation, the expansion of the Yesunbulag 110/35 kV substation, cost estimation, equipment and procurement advice, and design supervision. Engineering design of the 10 MW / 42 MWh Battery Energy Storage System in Yesunbulag Soum, Govi-Altai.
40 MW of solar and 90 MWh of storage for MAK
Under a partnership between Mongolyn Alt (MAK) and Huawei, three solar-plus-storage plants now supply industrial sites and mines in Tuv, Dornogovi and Dundgovi: Dalanjargalan (19.7 MW / 48 MWh), Khoot (13.5 MW / 32 MWh) and Sergelen (4.9 MW / 10 MWh). As a subcontractor to the EPC contractor, we provided engineering design, consulting and design supervision. Mongolia MAK Solar Project: 40 MW solar and 90 MWh energy storage.
